Historical Fiction

Across all three, readers argue less about the history than the size of the books carrying it: whether hundreds of extra pages of research, ritual, and repetition earn their keep or delay a story that was already working.

What RNKD readers said

Cover of Lonesome Dove by Larry McMurtry Roundtable 9 READERS ONE DNF Lonesome Dove Larry McMurtry · 1985 AVI DEPENDS I would recommend it to someone willing to spend a long time watching a plan become a burden. DANIEL YES My final judgment is that Lonesome Dove earns its reputation because it is not really a celebration of the West. JESSICA YES I finished the book tired, sad, and more impressed by the ordinary acts of care than by the gunfights. Cover of The Name of the Rose by Umberto Eco Roundtable 6 READERS The Name of the Rose Umberto Eco · 1980 AVI DEPENDS Read it if you can tolerate long arguments, repeated theological disputes, and a mystery that keeps changing its paperwork. DAVID YES I enjoyed The Name of the Rose, although I did not enjoy every page equally. JAMES DEPENDS Would I recommend it? Yes, but with a clear warning about what you are agreeing to. Cover of The Nightingale by Kristin Hannah Roundtable 9 READERS The Nightingale Kristin Hannah · 2015 ASHLEY DEPENDS But if you are willing to accept a book that is sometimes blunt, repetitive, and openly designed to make you cry, there is a lot here that matters. EMILY YES But I cannot dismiss the novel as manipulative just because it made me cry. JAMES DEPENDS So, yes, I found parts of it moving.
