Nonfiction

In both books, readers trust the checklist over the sermon: the specific failures, a fixed rope not ready, a screw stripped by an angry hand, land harder than either book's larger claims about heroism on the mountain or Quality as the root of reality.

What RNKD readers said

Cover of Into Thin Air by Jon Krakauer Roundtable 7 READERS Into Thin Air Jon Krakauer · 1997 AVI YES Krakauer's greatest achievement is that he makes the disaster understandable without making it feel inevitable. DANIEL YES I finished Into Thin Air impressed, disturbed, and more skeptical of the word “adventure” than I was before. DAVID YES The book’s value is that it shows exactly how a carefully organised undertaking can become unsound while everyone involved is still insisting that the next step is manageable. Cover of Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance by Robert M. Pirsig Roundtable 10 READERS Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance Robert M. Pirsig · 1974 AVI DEPENDS I would recommend the book to anyone who can tolerate long philosophical detours and who has some respect for repairing, building, writing, teaching, or maintaining anything. DANIEL DEPENDS The honest response is to say that this one works intermittently. DAVID DEPENDS My final view is therefore mixed, but not evenly mixed.
